Nicole Kidman is one of those phenomenal actresses. She will always stand out no matter what group of actresses she is put with, and no matter what film she's in she makes it sparkle. Her talent is obviously a partial reason for this, her unworldly beauty, but her grace and obvious intelligence also adds to her overall effect. Since Far and Away with Tom Cruise and even now to the film Nine she leaves an impression. In Nine she plays Claudia, Guido's film muse, who he also falls in love with. Atwood wanted her costume to express her beautiful silhouette and she chose a silk taffeta dress, and Dennis Basso fur and fedora.

I'm not a fan of big actresses. I like quirky barely known actresses that don't have enough money to hire a personal stylist. You can see their true personalities because they pick out their own clothing. These women are usually women to admire, not only for their personal styler, but they tend to pick roles for their beauty rather then how much they pay. However one can't deny the physical beauty Penelope Cruz represents, she is a big actress but she deserves it because she genuinely can act. In the film Nine, she plays Carla, Guido's mistress. Throughout the movie she is almost always seen in beautiful lingerie made of lace, but in one scene she is fully clothed and she wears a fitted suit made of vintage fabric with custom-made fur by Dennis Basso.
Kate Hudson is not a good actress. She's just not. She's meant to live in the world of mindless romantic comedies and she should NEVER cross into the real film industry. The film industry that is nothing else, but a form of artistic domain. Unfortunately, she is one of our leading ladies in Nine. As for red carpet style Hudson has always been a simple bohemian, nothing to daring, clothes ripped off of Janis Joplin gone from the salvation army to imposture brands. But in the film she plays Stephanie a film critic with style that moved with the fashions of the time, CoCo Chanel inspired suits with colorful blouses, and voluminous hair styles that only supported big ridiculous earrings, and far to much eye shadow. All together she looks like a reporter in uniform for a fashion magazine rather then a film critic. As the movie evolves and she performs a dancing and singing number, her costume reflects that. In her number she wears a dress with Swarovski diamond crystals from the 1920s, but with the same voluminous updo. A dazzling fringed ensemble with hair bigger then the actresses range of talent.
Costume designer Colleen Atwood not only designed italian lace lingerie, beaded corsets, and fur trimmed silk gowns for the girls of Nine, the new musical movie phenome directed by the film Chicago's director Rob Marshall, but Ms. Atwood designed an elite group of remarkable women. Each wardrobe for each character defined their personalities both professionally and emotionally. The film could not have been completed without the razzle dazzle of sexy and carefully made costumes, not only for the glamorous look, but for the way in which the clothing defines the women and evolves with their characters.
